The clutcher is essentially a self-cleating device that forms a fixed-loop with 1/8 inch wire rope. The mechanism uses a serrated steel wedge in each cylinder to grip the cable.
The wedge can be released by pressing on the collars at the wire rope entry points. The housing of the mechanism is cast out of nickel plated steel.
The shape and orientation of the wedge allows cable to pass through in one direction. When a load is applied to the cable in the opposite direction, the wedge grips the cable, preventing it from moving.
