Making a Difference with Quality and Care

We are dedicated to enhancing the lives of our customers and their communities.

Our commitment to producing long-lasting, high-quality products goes hand in hand with practices that support people, the planet, and communities.

Discover how we make this a reality.

Offsetting Our Plastic Footprint

It’s official, Big Star Lights has partnered with CleanHub, an organization on a mission to responsibly collect and dispose of ocean-bound plastic in coastal regions around the world.

So, why are we doing this?

We're convinced that using plastic comes with responsibility. And we're on a mission to ensure that Christmas lights can be a sustainable industry for generations to come.

That’s why we made a goal to collect 10,000 lb of plastic waste in the next 12 months. In addition, CleanHub's job opportunities empowers workers in India and Indonesia to lead waste management in their own communities.

  • Recycling Program

When old Christmas lights aren't disposed responsibly, they can have detrimental effects on the environment. Big Star Lights will safely recycle your old Christmas lights. If your lights are still useable, we will donate them to a local charity, ensuring that countless individuals in need will continue to benefit from your generosity.

  • Lowering Our Carbon Emissions

Big Star Lights is dedicated to minimizing our carbon footprint . We accomplish this by reducing business travel and by limiting emissions at our facility. In 2023, we replaced our warehouse's propane forklift with an all-electric forklift. Big Star Lights continues to uncover innovative ways to run our business sustainably, keeping the environment at the forefront of our mission.

  • We Offer a Living Wage

We recognize that when our employees feel valued, they are more motivated in their work and happier in life. That's why Big Star Lights offers a living wage to all our full-time and seasonal staff. These strides propel us to create a rewarding, equitable, and diverse workplace.

  • Giving Back to the Community

Every June, Big Star Lights donates part of its proceeds to Rainbow Railroad. They are a not-for-profit organization that aids LGBTQIA2S+ individuals seeking refuge in Canada and the United States after facing persecution abroad. We donated 5% of our sales from the two first weeks of Pride Month 2023 to support Rainbow Railroad in finding safe homes for individuals.

  • Sustainable Farming

Outside of the peak holiday season, Big Star Lights spends works with community organizations that support sustainable living. Last year, we worked with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) organization called The Sharing Farm. They employ a business model that supports local farmers while providing consumers fresh, healthy produce.

  • Donating Lights to Our Charitable Partners

We believe that everyone can benefit from holiday cheer. That's why we donate old, functioning lights to our community partners.

"The Christmas Express at the BC Forest Discovery Centre is so much better this year thanks to Big Star Lights! We are so happy to have found a product of such great quality that looks fantastic, is easy to use, and will last us for years!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Do eco friendly Christmas lights exist?

Yes, they do! LED light bulbs require 75-80% less energy than their incandescent counterparts, making them an eco friendly alternative. Big Star Lights' LEDs are more stable than our competitors, making them shine for longer. As a result, Big Star Lights will require less plastic in the long-term, and run on lower wattage than our big-box store competitors.

How can I have an environmentally friendly Christmas?

Buying a lights timer will ensure your lights won't shine all night long. This will save your energy bill and create an environmental impact you can be proud of. Also, try opting for non-lit ornamentations to intersperse with your yearly Christmas lights display. Hang an unlit wreath over your door or install lawn decorations for a festive look that doesn't require energy consumption.

Do you offer any rewards for recycling old Christmas lights?

Absolutely! If you recycle your Christmas lights, we will offer you a 5% discount on your next in-store purchase.

How do you track carbon emissions?

Big Star Lights maintains accurate emissions tracking by collecting data on air travel, automobile travel, warehouse electricity use, and products' freight emissions. We conduct a yearly sustainability report to stay accountable to our stakeholders and to dedicate ourselves to continue lowering our carbon footprint.
